While creating this project for the client, Doug made a huge mistake. He picked up the wrong paperwork and determined that the project was to be distressed on both sides, which he performed.
When the client was informed of this mistake, he elected to reject the project and have it rebuilt. This is an appropriate call as we made the mistake. In knowing that we would rebuild the project, the client changed the art glass design. Since the glass would also have to be rebuilt, we were fine with the change, and absorbed the additional cost for custom glass.
When the second project was complete, the client did not like some of the grain pattern. (Grain pattern is not something that we can guarantee and is not an acceptable reason for rejecting a project per our terms and conditions.) Nonetheless, we accepted his rejection. He then said he would be willing to accept the first project that was accidentally distressed.
Ironically, we received an order the week after his first rejection for a nearly identical door. The new customer was willing to accept the previously rejected door if we would add two matching sidelites, which we were happy to accommodate.
Since the first door was no longer available, we were faced with building the unit a third time or refunding the client’s deposit, which we chose to do.
The second, rejected project sat in our showroom for a couple of years until Covid happened. Doug used the down-time to apply a finish application and build some custom carved casings for the unit.
Within a year, the Russo’s fell in love with the display in our showroom and purchased it for their home in Mancos, Colorado. We felt exonerated in that the second door was truly beautiful and deserved to grace any home. The finished version of the door is shown below.
